Job Description:
What You Will Do
At Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), we solve national
security challenges through scientific excellence. Waste Management
(WM) Waste Generator Services group (WGS) is looking for highly
motivated technicians to help facilitate waste disposal at our
multi-disciplinary footprint. The selected candidate will support
LANL waste management coordinators by packaging and shipping waste
throughout LANL facility.
Primary duties of the Environment Tec 2 level may include but are
not limited to:
Minimum Job Requirements:
Regulation:
Demonstrated experience and knowledge of applicable local, state,
and federal laws and regulations relating to the handling of
Low-Level Waste and hazardous material. Demonstrated skill in
understanding work hazards, safety practices, operating
configurations, and lock-out/tag-out policies and procedures.
Communication:
Ability to communicate effectively with customers, peers, and all
levels of management.
Skills/Expertise:
Ability to work with radioactive or other hazardous materials as
dictated by programmatic needs.
Teamwork:
Demonstrated ability to work as a team member in a conscientious,
professional, and responsible manner in a multi-disciplinary
environment and interacting effectively with a variety of
organizations.
Customer Service:
Demonstrated success in providing good customer service.
Clearance and Mandatory Certifications:
The ability to obtain a Q-clearance and/or Human Reliability
Program (HRP).
Training/Certifications: Ability to obtain Radworker, HAZWOPER,
RCRA, Forklift, Air Purifying Respiratory Protection certification.
Site specific training at TA-55, RLWTF, RLUOB and/or CMR and WCRRF.
Full qualification involves obtaining unescorted PF-4 access.
Education/Experience: Position requires a High School Diploma or
equivalent and a minimum of 3 years of related experience; or, an
equivalent combination of education and experience directly related
to the occupation.
DOE Order 426.2: DOE Order 426.2 requires high school diploma.
Desired Qualifications:
Regulation:
Knowledge of one or more of the following: NNSS Waste Acceptance
Criteria (WAC), LANL WAC, and the LANL New Mexico Environmental
Department permit. Experience with nuclear criticality safety,
material control and accountability, radiological protection,
safety basis compliance, waste minimization, and waste
management.
Communication: Demonstrated experience following detailed
procedures effectively, both orally and in writing.
Skills/Expertise:
Working knowledge of Low-Level Waste or other regulated waste
packaging requirements. Successful experience with
accounting/management systems such as WCATS. Demonstrated
experience with nuclear facility personal protective equipment
(PPE) such as anti-contamination clothing, booties, a variety of
safety gloves, and full-face respirator qualification.
Essential Job Functions(can perform with or without reasonable
accommodation):
Depth perception, binocular vision, reading vision, ability to
speak, ability to discriminate speech, ability to hear in a normal
range (500 to 3000 hz), standing, walking, use stairs, fixed
ladders and ladders up to six feet, ability to lift 50 pounds and
carry 35 pounds, typing or keyboarding.
Work Environment:
General work environment may include but is not limited to:
outdoors, working alone, working extended shifts, operation of
motor vehicles, R&D laboratory settings with corresponding
chemicals and hazards.
Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to
serve a period of continuous service in their current position in
order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the
Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they
may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of
their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is
a 1 year.

Located in beautiful northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National
Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution
engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. Our

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants
selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and
must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified
matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US
Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon
position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons
information may be required that may or may not be available to
dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual
must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required
except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for
additional information.
426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel
Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear
Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure
candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform
the requirements of the job.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful
applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a
substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although
New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana,
use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A
positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of
employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for
regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served
the required period of continuous service in their current position
are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If
an employee has not served the required period of continuous
service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the
documented approval of their Division Leader. Please refer to
