Job Description:
Position Summary:Work under the general nursing process while
using independent judgment to assign nurses, technicians and
nursing care to assigned patients. Designate shift and schedule
assignments, call in staff, send staff home and monitor attendance.
Provide clinical leadership for nursing and technician staff.
Ensure adequate staff to meet patient census. Supervise staff and
patient care delivery on designated shift, and serve as a clinical
resource for staff. Serve as a role model to promote a positive
work environment and quality patient care. Ensure adherence to
Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care
assignment may include neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and
geriatric age groups.Accountability:
- STRATEGIC INITIATIVES - Active participation in nursing
strategic initiatives such as quality improvement and monitoring,
TJC compliance, Magnet Recognition, recruitment and retention of
staff and patient and employee satisfaction
- Addendum - SUPERVISION - Supervise and provide guidance for the
infrastructure for the nurse residency program; activities may
include but are not limited to supervision of new graduate nurses
in various specialty track positions, example of which include
peds, inpatient, ambulatory, critical care and OR; identifying
appropriate placement, assessing for progression and competency in
nursing and completion of evaluations; provide informal leadership
and mentorship to all nurse residents in the program, monthly
rounding on nurse residents and assisting the nurse educator with
education and implementation of the nurse residency program and
program curriculum; recruiting, screening applications,
interviewing and matching new graduates to their desired unit,
onboarding and tracking nurses through their first year of
practice; responsible for evaluations, disciplines and employee
file management; evaluating and responding to data that is specific
to the nurse residency program including reviewing trends and
implementing PDSAs as appropriate in conjunction with the various
leaders of different areas to help new graduates stay successful
and optimize patient care outcomes
- SHARED GOVERNANCE - Support and implement the UNMH shared
governance model
- Addendum - EDUCATION & TRAINING - Supervisor will plan and
attend seminars and new graduate nurse orientation utilizing
evidence based practice for nurse residency or transition to
practice program objectives and education curriculum; coordinate
with RN supervisors and Educators on designated units for feedback
on employees; identify educational needs, practice gaps and issues
of staff by collecting data and related information; analyze
issues, trends, and supporting evidence to determine needs of nurse
residents for all clinical areas; develop instructional seminars,
in collaboration with others and based on identified learning
needs, that prescribe(s) education curricula, strategies,
alternatives, and resources; take into account quality indicators
and policies, procedures, guidelines; integrate research findings
into plan
- Addendum - EDUCATION & TRAINING - Implement or coordinate the
implementation of the educational curricula utilizing adult
learning principles to employ the most appropriate methodology(ies)
to meet goals and objectives; teach relevant content; coordinate
educational initiatives and activities; ensure safety and comfort
and promote positive learning and practice environments; use
creativity and innovation to improve the learning experience; act
as a change agent by identifying solutions to problems, addressing
barriers, and supporting implementation of new ideas based on
evidence; educate staff on change; exhibit flexibility; integrate
best practice based on evidence into all educational activities;
demonstrate ability to conduct a thorough literature review;
demonstrate inclusion of up-to-date evidence in educational
activity development; promote scientific inquiry; support research
activities; disseminate research findings
- INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT - Using independent judgment assign
nursing personnel and staff to specific patients
- ASSIGNMENT - Designate shift and schedule assignments; assign
duties in accordance with the plan of care, patient needs, and
within the scope of staff qualifications and
licensure/certification/registry
- Addendum - COMMITTEES and MEETINGS Attend meetings; participate
in committee functions; participate in hospital-wide activities and
committees within the scope of position or as directed
- ACCOUNTABILITY - Supervise and direct staff providing patient
care; accountable for care provided to patients on assigned
shift
- LIAISON - Act as liaison as necessary between physicians,
staff, patients, families, and other departments to promote and
facilitate communication, problem solving, decision-making, crisis
intervention, resource utilization, and conflict
management
- SUPERVISION - Develop efficient organizational structure,
supervise employees - select, terminate, train, educate, correct
deficiencies, perform appraisals, issue discipline, counsel,
schedule work assignments; encourage staff teamwork and growth
initiatives
- ROLE MODEL - Act as a clinical resource and role model for
department personnel
- DELEGATION - Delegate and monitor completion of duties
according to departmental and Hospitals policies
- PATIENT CARE - Deliver safe direct care to an assigned group of
patients as required
- POLICIES - Work within Hospitals, Nursing division and
departmental policies
- CARE PLAN - Work in collaboration with the healthcare team,
implement and document individualized care plans incorporating age
specific considerations, including discharge planning and
patient/family teaching
- TESTS AND PROCEDURES - Assist with special tests and
procedures, ensure proper consent has been obtained
- PARTICIPATION - Participate in orientation; upon successful
completion of preceptor training assume precepting and evaluation
responsibilities of new personnel
- EMERGENCY MEASURES - Assist with or institute emergency
measures for sudden, adverse developments in patients
- MEDICAL RECORDS - Ensure that patient medical records contain
necessary information
- INQUIRIES - Answer telephones and triage calls as per
departmental policy
- MEDICATION - Administer medication, including IV medication,
via the Seven Rights; document and communicate clinical
findings
- ENVIRONMENT - Maintain a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic
environment for patients/families in accordance with Hospitals
standards
- DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development
through participation in educational programs, reading current
literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops
- PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety-related policies,
procedures and protocols
- PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient
safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through
questioning of current policies and processes
- PATIENT SAFETY 3 - Identify and report/correct environmental
conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue
risk
- PATIENT SAFETY 4 - Report potential or actual patient safety
concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely
manner
- PATIENT SAFETY 5 - Encourage patients to actively participate
in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or
situations that they don't understand or may "not seem right"
Certification Requirements:
- RN MATRIX - Complete and maintain unit/clinic based required
certifications and competencies as listed in the department
expectations/and or the unit/clinic education matrix
Education Requirements:
- Nursing program (nationally accredited) graduate
Experience Requirements:
- 2 years directly related experience
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
- Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) in State of New Mexico or as
allowed by reciprocal agreement by State of New Mexico
- CAP I - Clinical Advancement Program Level I requirements

- CPR Certification for Healthcare/BLS Providers or for
Professional Rescuers or must obtain within 30 calendar days of
date of position
Education Requirements - Preferred:
- Bachelor's Degree of Science in Nursing
- Addendum - MSN
Experience Requirements - Preferred:
- Bilingual English/Spanish
- Bilingual English/Keres, Tewa, Tiwa, Towa, Zuni, or Navajo
Physical Demands Requirements:
- Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally,
and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds
of force constantly to move objects or people. Physical Demand
requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
Licensure/Certification Requirements - Preferred:
- Nationally Certified in area of specialty
Professional licensure as appropriate to the clinical objectives of
the unit:
- Nationally Certified in area of specialty
Testing Requirements:
- UNMH IV verification
- Tuberculosis testing is completed upon hire and additionally as
required
Working Conditions Requirements:
- Sig Hazard: Chemicals, bio hazardous materials requiring
extensive safety precautions and may require protective
equipment
