What You Will Do The position is located in Los Alamos, NM. The Plutonium Machining Group is the operational group at the forefront of pit manufacturing and investigating plutonium pits that are at the heart of the United States' modern thermonuclear weapons stockpile. The pit surveillance program supports early identification of stockpile aging concerns to predict the lifetime of weapon components and materials. Manufacturing and surveillance processes are conducted at the Laboratory's nuclear material handling facility, TA-55, PF-4. The successful candidate will support engineering and projects in the development of tooling and equipment for various projects in our development and production areas. Typical processes that are performed include: tooling design and prototyping, reverse engineering, and process development assistance. Responsibilities will entail equipment installation and production support for these processes. The successful candidate will work closely with other LANL design, tooling, prototype, and fabrication personnel to ensure that these products are compatible for use in a Category 2 nuclear facility. All documentation that is developed will meet nuclear conduct of operations requirements and meet the quality requirements of our diverse customer-base. The successful candidate will be expected to work independently; work as part of a team; and contribute to continuous process improvements to meet customer requirements. What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Computer-aided Drafting Proficient in use of computer-aided drafting (CAD) and product data management (PDM) software tools used to produce models, drawings, layouts and sketches of components or systems. Intermediate level understanding of modeling and drawing drafting principals, application of standards, symbols, notes, GD&T on drawings and models to capture design intent. Intermediate understanding of ASME, ANSI, AWS and related industry standards for addressing fit, form and function Mechanical/Machining Intermediate understanding of engineering, design, and drafting concepts related to a mechanical, electro/mechanical or electrical disciplines. Intermediate knowledge of principles for design, fabrication, assembly and fielding of components and mechanisms. Intermediate understanding of component and tool design, fixturing, printed circuit boards, schematics, and facility equipment Intermediate understanding of machine shop equipment like a mill, lathe, drill press, welder and inspection equipment Intermediate understanding of engineering materials and their suitability for component design and manufacture. Teamwork Experience working in diverse teams, collaborating on designs from rough sketches with minimal guidance from a senior level technicians Training/Certifications Specific certifications are not required but will be considered. Education and Experience Position requires an Associate's Degree in an Engineering or Technical field and 3 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Desired Qualifications: Demonstrated knowledge and experience with ProEngineer Creo and PDMLink. Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with GD&T. Demonstrated knowledge of reverse engineering and rapid prototyping. Demonstrated technical knowledge associated with production processes related to manufacturing. Demonstrated knowledge mathematical formulas, computations, and data gathering methods. Existing DOE "Q" clearance (or equivalent). The Plutonium Machining Group PT-2 Group has the responsibility for operating and maintaining the plutonium facility laboratories, gloveboxes and equipment. In addition, PT-2 manages the facility's cold machining shop and various cold laboratory spaces at TA-55, TA-3 and TA-35. PT-2's surveillance processing activities consist of Non-Destructive Testing analysis and material movement in support of the Surveillance Shelf Life and Core Units.
