What You Will Do This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. The Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division, Dynamic Structure Design, Engineering, and Vessel Operations (J-2) Group is looking for an Engineering Analyst to support the group's mission of impulsively loaded confinement vessel design, monitoring, and fielding operations. The Engineering Analyst position will be filled as a R&D (Mechanical/Structural) Engineer Level 2 or 3, depending on the skills and level of experience of the selected candidate. R&D Engineer 2 ($94,100-$155,700) As an Analyst at the R&D Engineer level 2, you will be responsible for evaluating designs of impulsively loaded structures and components by performing detailed stress analysis, thermal (stress) analysis, fatigue/fracture calculations, and shock and fragment evaluations. This includes performing both classical and numerical engineering analysis. Numerical analysis would be performed using tools for finite element analysis, such as ABAQUS; Hydrocode analysis using Autodyn or CTH; fatigue/fracture evaluation using Signal FFS; and design visualization using CAD-based modeling in packages such as Solid Works and/ or CREO. R&D Engineer 3 ($113,100-$190,900) As an R&D Engineer 3, you will be expected to perform all the duties of an R&D Engineer 2. In addition, you will be responsible for performing high explosive blast calculations of various components and structures in addition to vessels, such as bunkers and temporary shielding structures as well as the developing engineering technical specifications for the procurement/fabrication of hardware. You must be able to perform thermal transport (i.e., heat transfer) analyses to determine steady state or transient thermal stresses in structures. What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Minimum Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 2: Engineering Strong background in the fundamentals of mechanical/structural engineering, including experience in design, analysis, and testing of statically or dynamically loaded structures, systems and components. Analysis Demonstrated experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) as well as classical analysis tools. Ability to develop and analyze structural models ranging from simplified models suitable for classical stress analysis to more complex models. Familiarity with classical thermal transport methods and analysis, and fatigue/fracture concepts. This includes having a working knowledge of design drafting practices. Design Familiarity with design visualization tools, CAD experience using CREO or Solid Works. Communication Skills Demonstrated ability to effectively interact and present technical issues, both verbally and in written form, to an audience with various technical backgrounds, as well as experience providing technical direction, mentoring and coordinating/monitoring the work of others. In addition to the R&D Field Engineer 2 requirements, the R&D 3 Engineer must have the following: Analysis Demonstrated experience performing classical and numerical engineering analysis of simple and complex structures, systems and components. Demonstrated experience with 2D and 3D implicit and explicit finite element methods and analysis FEM/FEA tools (ABAQUS, DYNA 3D, etc). Familiarity with the use of hydrocodes such as Autodyn or CTH. Familiarity with impact and fracture mechanics for system design and remaining life determination. Familiarity with classical transport phenomena methods. Engineering Demonstrated working experience in developing design, fabrication, inspection, and assembly specifications. Demonstrated experience in testing statically or dynamically loaded structures, systems, and components. Quality Standards Experience in the use and application of consensus standards (such as, ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII, Divisions 1, 2, and 3, API 579 Fitness for Service Code, AWS Welding Code, AISC and AISI Steel Codes, ASM International Materials Code, etc.). Desired Qualifications: Experience in using and applying nationally recognized codes and standards Experience in acquiring and analyzing test data for mechanical systems Experience with high explosive testing R&D Engineer 2 Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Focus on Mechanical and/or Structural Engineering is preferred. R&D Engineer 3 Education/Experience: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred. Focus on Mechanical and/or Structural Engineering preferred.
