EOE/AA - M/F/Vet/Disability/Drug-Free Workplace SMSI is looking for an experienced Structural Engineer Mid Level in Los Alamos, NM for long term assignments (anticipate ~2+ years) to work on technology projects for the Department of Energy (DOE). The candidate must have expertise as a strong leader to work with a team of engineers to perform detailed analysis and design for systems, structures and components for nuclear facilities, primarily for the Department of Energy (DOE) using DOE design codes and standards. You will work in a multidisciplinary engineering team completing the structural analysis, design and seismic qualification of nuclear safety-related systems, structures and components, including custom material handling and process/containment equipment, primarily gloveboxes. The work will involve preparing comprehensive design packages by writing specifications, calculations, and other documents, as well as assisting in the preparation of design drawings. Job Description: Structural Engineer Mid Level will be responsible for supporting all structural design duties. Works on discrete tasks to generate comprehensive and detailed engineering products, including technical reports, calculations, specifications, and drawings. Supports development of functional and operational requirements, design criteria, and identification of applicable codes and standards for new design packages. Supports the LANL engineering services team at TA-55 Plutonium Facility with facility system upgrades and equipment installation design tasks. Develops modification design change packages. Disposition field change requests and Nonconformance Reports. Review sand approve design performed by Design Agencies external to LANL. Reviews vendor data. Assists in the development of engineering project management plans. Assists system engineers in developing and maintaining technical baseline documents at project closeout. Participates in all support activities required to complete all design efforts and quality assurance processes. Works with other disciplines to ensure accuracy of the package, meet schedule, and budget commitments. Works in a collaborative design team environment. Ensures internal communication and coordination of design efforts occurs, often with design team members dispersed among offices across the country. Required Experience: Minimum of 8 years of commercial or nuclear facility design experience. Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience which includes non-reactor nuclear facility design, nuclear reactor design and/or operations, nuclear environmental management, or naval nuclear operations/design. Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Civil / Structural Engineering from an ABET accredited program is required. Master's degree is a plus. Additional Skillsets: Effective, clear, and concise oral and written communication skills. Strong grasp of fundamental structural engineering design theories and principles. Basic familiarity with conventional structural design codes. o IBC o ASCE 7 o AISC Steel Construction Manual o ACI 318 Fluency using Microsoft Office Suite. Meets expectations for attendance and punctuality. Client projects for this position require U.S. Citizenship. DOE Clearance - Applicant must be able to obtain a DOE clearance. Location - Los Alamos, NM (other locations may be available) Eligible for Temporary Duty travel costs Position - Full Time Physical Requirements: The job requires the ability to sit for extended periods at a computer workstation.
