Accelerator Operations Technology (AOT) Division provides systems engineering, program management and operational support to ensure the safety and reliability of the LANSCE accelerator complex. AOT Division is responsible for the operation, maintenance and engineering upgrades necessary to provide high quality beams to a variety of experimental and production facilities. The Instrumentation and Controls Group (AOT-IC) performs a number of technical functions in support of AOT Division goals.As the member of AOT-IC, the successful applicant for this position will be expected to work as the Team Leader of the Software Controls team whose primary responsibility is to support the operation of the instrumentation, control and data acquisition systems deployed at the LANSCE facility. The successful applicant will be expected to provide technical leadership for automated accelerator control-system software development and control-system operational & maintenance support which will require interacting with controls engineers, physicists, operators, instrumentation and controls technicians and others. The LANSCE Control System incorporates Linux, RTEMS, VxWorks, Java, C, C++, Python, LabVIEW-based, EPICS tools, and legacy VMS-based control and application software. Job responsibilities will include software engineering, maintenance and upgrades of current systems, documentation, and participation in evaluation, design and development of future control systems. The team leader position requires approximately 65% time spent on technical contribution and 35% management. What You Need Scientist 3 ($110,000-$186,300) Position requires a seasoned, experienced professional in a broad discipline or narrow, specialized field and has the ability to develop advanced concepts, techniques, and standards for specialized, state-of-the-art technologies and concepts. Knowledge and proven ability in developing and implementing software solutions, and recommendation of solutions to technical problems for organizational and/or business unit initiatives. Experience in recruiting, evaluating, mentoring and retaining talented undergraduate students, graduate students, postdocs, and staff (including promoting diversity and fostering teamwork). Experience with applying and teaching software engineering design cycle principles such as: requirements gathering, design, implementation, debugging, testing, validating, and maintenance of large code base. Display a substantial and significant record of achievement through reports, publications, intellectual property, and/or technical products. Serve as a role model for effective and creative technical leadership within the organization or business unit. Knowledge and experience of appropriate safe practices for technical work. Availability for rotating on-call and working after hours when required. Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 4 ($132,500-$229,900): In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires: Position typically requires a senior Engineer/Scientist in either a broad discipline or narrow, specialized field with the ability to translate national needs into technological objectives and goals. Extensive experience leading and managing a software oriented group of people (functional and/or project management wise) in support of large Production and/or R&D facilities. Documented authored reports and/or publications of major importance and/or frequently which provided considerable impact within the engineering/scientific community. Leadership in identifying, promoting, and developing appropriate new organizational-wide technical capabilities. Experience serving in a consultative role to senior-level management and/or governmental management representatives. Advanced and/or broad knowledge about software principles for instrumentation and control systems. Desired Qualifications Scientist 3 & 4: Programming experience with VxWorks or RTEMS. Programming experience in Bash, Perl, Tcl/Tk, C, C++, Java, and LabVIEW. Experience in Linux system management: creating accounts, configuring system characteristics, installation of software, etc. Experience in network management: NIS, DNS, DHCP, etc. Experience designing/developing automated control system software. Experience with all aspects of project management. Knowledge of relational databases theory. Knowledge of control & data acquisition theory and instrumentation hardware. Programming experience with the EPICS toolkit (Experimental Physics Industrial Control System). Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship. Education/Experience at Scientist 3: Position requires an advanced degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. M.S. or Ph.D. in computer science, electrical or controls engineering, physics or physical science, or related fields preferred. Education/Experience at Scientist 4: Position requires an advanced degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of 5-10 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. M.S. or Ph.D. in computer science, electrical or controls engineering, physics or physical science, or related fields preferred.
