What You Will Do
Be part of an amazing engineering team here at the nation's Plutonium Center of Excellence that supports our Nation's nuclear deterrent. As an Industrial Engineer you will be providing technical expertise and leadership in the design and development of process and quality improvement programs for the plutonium facility. Being a hands-on Industrial Engineer with project leadership and problem-solving skills to work in our collaborative team environment, you will conduct time studies, develop and implement work standards and participate on new product development teams. Your work will directly support the execution of manufacturing of weapon components, the surveillance of weapon components and materials in the nuclear stockpile, and other national security missions.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
R&D Engineer 3 ($115,500-$194,900)
Have demonstrated knowledge and experience in an engineering discipline. Applies and interprets, on a broad basis, specialized, state-of-the-art engineering and scientific principles, techniques, methods and tools to provide solutions for an extensive and diverse range of complex and/or ambiguous problems where analysis of situations or data requires in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Develops innovative advanced concepts, theories, methods, techniques and approaches to address specialized problems. May contribute to the development of industry standards. Develops new technical capabilities and creates opportunities to extend R&D engineering through the expansion of existing efforts. With demonstrated knowledge of and experience in designing, planning, and executing problem solving and process improvement projects, you will be expected to lead members from various process teams in a collaborative manner to collect data, make specific suggestions, analyze data, perform cost-benefit-risk analysis, recommend changes to processes based on the results of the analyses, define post-implementation monitoring and benefits, and help implement the changes. You will champion the changeand make presentations to the team and the upper management at various points of the change study. You will be expected to get familiar with IE models and to conduct simulations with them under the supervision of more experienced staff. Ability to lead teams is a must as you will be expected to work with various process teams whose members would have varied levels of experience and expertise with the subject matter. Additionally, you will develop and/or contribute ideas for new proposals and business development opportunities. Lead development of technical sections of small to moderate proposals and actively mentors, coaches, and trains junior staff. You will be expected to provide solutions to complex IE problems involving a combination of labor, space, and technological changes under multiple constraints arising from resource availability, safety and regulatory requirements. A thorough knowledge of and experience in engineering disciplines and designing, planning and executing problem solving and process improvement projects.
Prior experience with application of lean manufacturing principles and Six-Sigma Black Belt certification are desirable. You will be expected to be the champion of the changes your IE teams recommend and work with process teams and upper management to plan, schedule, and oversee the implementation of recommended changes. You may be tasked with developing strong KPI metrics and strategies, and develop/apply simulation models, and tracking systems to improve and monitor processes. Experience leading Lean and Six Sigma projects, coaching Lean Six Sigma methodologies, applying change management, and with industrial simulation models is highly desirable. Prior industry experience is also highly desirable, particularly in an environment where safety and regulatory compliance are of paramount importance.
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Lead teams through a problem-solving methodology (Lean Six Sigma projects and process improvement projects) using process and value stream mapping
  • Develop innovative advanced concepts, theories, methods, techniques and approaches to address specialized problems.
  • Influences organizational, project, and program strategies and directions.
    Education/Experience: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.
    DOE Order 426.2: Requires a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or related science, 2 years job related experience, and 1 year of nuclear experience.
    Desired Qualifications:
    • Lean, Six Sigma, and/or Lean Six Sigma certification from an accredited source.
    • Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification from an accredited institution is highly desired.
    • Experience coaching and mentoring Green Belts, Black Belt candidates, project teams, and production personnel.
    • Demonstrated experience working in a manufacturing or production organization requiring implementation of defined manufacturing, testing, safety, and quality requirements.
    • Experience in process improvement, process engineering, or industrial engineering.
    • Expertise and experience in systems engineering, statistical process control (SPC), and lean six sigma processes.
    • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with system and subsystem qualification testing and/or analysis. Experience in data mining, data manipulation, and data analysis.
    • Certification and/or experience in change management techniques.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of Conduct of Operations in a nuclear or radiological facility.
    • Existing DOE "Q" clearance (or similar).
      Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.
      Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.       Additional Details
      Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2.       Clearance: Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
      *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
      HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, -712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
      426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
      New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
      Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
      Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
