What You Will DoThis position will be filled at either the R Engineer 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.R Engineer 2 ($96100 - $159,000)As an R Engineer specializing in optical detonators, you will initiate and conduct engineering assignments that ensure consistent quality and high yield of product manufactured in the areas of inert component and detonator production operations for the Detonator Engineering Group (DP-ENG). Primary work scope includes, but is not limited to:With the guidance from the FLM and lead engineer, will have responsibilities for the design of optical detonator manufacturing technology and testing of experimental detonator components, subcomponents and completed units.Ensuring safety and security compliance, maintaining required training, adhering to laboratory policies, programs, procedures and practices.Collaboration with Process Engineers, other Manufacturing Engineers, Quality Engineers, and Production Technicians to develop solutions to complex problems, design and implement new technologies, improve production cycle times, and maximize production yield rates.Coordinating equipment maintenance and repair services to ensure production equipment is operating within required guidelines and specifications.Completely and continually document manufacturing processes through thorough design evaluations as well as feedback from the manufacturing groupR Engineer 3 ($115,500 - $194,900)In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the candidate will:Lead troubleshooting and upgrade activities for optical detonatorsLead small project teams, providing technical leadership and oversight in planning and execution.For more details about DP, visit the following sites:Internal: https://int.lanl.gov/org/ddw/aldwp/Non-Nuclear-Production/detonator-production/index.shtmlExternal: https://detonators.lanl.gov/What You NeedMinimum Job Requirements:Technical - Experience and proficiency working with moderately complex optical technologies including laser detonators, pulsed infrared laser systems & infrared laser light, fiber optic cables and assemblies, optical devices, measurement techniques, monitoring optimization of laser outputs. Can effectively apply technology, fixtures, and automation to produce the required result in the most efficient and repeatable way possible. Knowledge and application of Lean Manufacturing Principles. Leadership - Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership in the day-to-day process of system startup & operation, tooling setup, in-process performance monitoring, component inspection, and engineering decision-making.Analytical - Use data to identify areas of poor quality or efficiency and collaborate with all stakeholders to develop and implement improvements to make the manufacturing processes more robust. Communication - Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with all levels of the department. Can effectively explain equipment usage and training processes to manufacturing technicians both verbally and through formal written documentation. Quality - Demonstrated experience in monitoring process performance using Statistical Process Control, Six Sigma, and other methods.Interpretation of Drawings - Proficiency in interpreting and translating complex design agency specifications and engineering drawings.Additional Job Requirements for higher level title:In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:Comprehensive experience and proficiency working with complex optical technologies including laser detonators, pulsed infrared laser systems & infrared laser light, fiber optic cables and assemblies, optical devices, measurement techniques, monitoring optimization of laser outputs.Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
