(Honeywell), Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. (Jacobs), and HII Nuclear Inc. Responsibilities The Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) in Los Alamos is an applied science and engineering organization engaged in research, diagnostic development, analysis, testing, and field operations for the Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratory, NNSS, and other national labs. We are seeking to hire a Senior Principal Mechanical Engineer who possesses extensive experience in the design and manufacturing of mechanical systems utilizing a range of theoretical, computational, and experimental techniques to design integrated solutions to the most complex technical problems related to the development of diagnostic systems for weapons physics experiments. Key Responsibilities --- Work responsibilities include working closely with scientists and engineers from Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Sandia National Laboratory (SNL), and the NNSS.--- Provides technical leadership to the Stockpile Stewardship Organization, NNSS Program Managers, and Project Managers in the development of new projects and startups. Uses a mastery of subject matter expertise to develop multi-disciplinary solutions for state-of- the-art problems. Initiates collaboration with NSL partners and the NNSS.--- Translate high-value programmatic needs into technological objectives and requirements.--- Serves as an expert technical advisor to colleagues, customers, and management personnel on difficult and challenging technical issues.--- Applies knowledge and ingenuity to implement cutting edge, unique and novel solutions in technical fields of expertise.--- Generates initiatives and new ideas for new scope of work.--- Mentor scientific and engineering staff in engineering methods, processes, and best practices.--- Develop requirements documents and manufacturing specifications for designed and fabricated hardware.--- Prepares reports and oral presentations, including peer reviewed journal publications as appropriate. Authors reports and/or publications on designs of major importance having considerable impact within the scientific and engineering community. Encourages the development of intellectual property and publishing in refereed journals.--- In addition to fulfilling basic ESH&Q obligations:- Must assure that all aspects of safety have been addressed in design and execution of work.- Work may affect public health and safety.- May lead safety planning for high hazard potential projects.- May be designated Work Planner for other departments.- May help formulate ESH&Q guidelines Qualifications Due to the nature of our work, US Citizenship is required for all positions. --- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), plus at least 14 years' relevant experience. Skill building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge. Graduate research experience may be recognized.--- At least 14 years' relevant experience in mechanical engineering, manufacturing, and testing is preferred.--- Extensive experience in the design of pressure and high-vacuum systems, cryogenic systems including water, liquid hydrogen, and gas systems, various detector assemblies, injector component and test assemblies, accelerator electron beam lines, magnet design, beam diagnostic hardware design.--- Design, fabrication and commissioning of unique and custom powder and gas guns, and extensive expertise in analytical engineering including thermal and stress analysis.--- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment.--- Willing and able to mentor early career scientists, post-docs and colleagues in weapons physics and related diagnostic instrumentation including early career scientists from the nuclear weapons design laboratories.--- Demonstrated leadership qualities with emphasis on continuous improvement, team building, and interpersonal communication skills.--- Must have experience in planning and organizing team efforts.--- Demonstrated skill to establish and maintain strong and effective customer relations, and to anticipate change and adjust promptly and effectively.--- Must be people sensitive and possess the skills to promote an open and informal communications environment, and develop mutual trust and teamwork.--- Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.--- Must possess a valid driver's license. Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4 , "Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites," will be conducted. Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, and subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709 , "Counterintelligence Evaluation Program." Eligibility Requirements - To obtain a clearance, an individual must be a U.S. citizen at least 18 years of age.
