Accounting Department
Position Summary
General Ledger Accountant position performs general ledger accounting and analysis supporting the Controller and the Accounting office.

Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in accounting and/or finance, equivalent experience considered along with at least 9 to 12 credit hours of accounting classes
  • One or more years of professional accounting experience
  • Effective computer skills, especially in the use of Excel spreadsheets
  • Demonstrated ability in problem-solving, multi-tasking, and time management

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience working in higher education or governmental financial reporting
    • Demonstrated experience in fund accounting
    • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting procedures – GAAP
    • Experience with database applications, including BANNER and/or CORE
    • Strong decision-making, analytical, communication, organizational, and people skills

      Major Responsibilities

      • Ensures that data in the general ledger is accurate and complies with professional and regulatory standards
      • Maintains the College's chart of accounts with guidance from the Controller and Budget office, this includes setup of all areas of the COA (org, fund, detail codes, etc.)
      • Prepares journal vouchers to correct errors and reclassify transactions in the College's financial records in accordance with GAAP, GASB, and College Fiscal Rules.

      • Records journal entries across all areas of the College, including those that pertain to grants, capital construction, and general ledger accounting for the College
      • Performs banking duties such as approval of ACH files and stop payments
      • Ensures that the general ledger data supports budgeting and forecasting requirements
      • Analyzes and provides solutions to the College's internal control issues, focusing on continuous improvement
      • Performs monthly reconciliations of a variety of accounts, including Utilities, Sales Tax, State Interest and State Legal and ensures that payments and receipts on these accounts are accurate and timely
      • Prepares entries for State Capital Construction funding on State's CORE system
      • Monthly State capital construction accounting and reporting, including consistent communication with the Manager of Planning, Design and Construction
      • Prepares and submits monthly Sales Tax forms in accordance with filing deadlines
      • Assists with and analyzes financial reporting and third-party audits
      • Performs analysis and creates ad hoc reports when requested
      • Key member of the GL team and year-end close team, who performs monthly and annual close procedures such as accruals, deferrals, reclassifications, and interdepartmental entries
      • Assists with balance sheet account review, reconciliation, and analysis
      • Assists in the fiscal year-end process by preparing schedules and analyses such as: grant revenue reclassifications, accruals and deferrals, capital construction entries and reconciliation, prepare SEFA/Exhibit K, prepare pledged revenue/expense report, other fiscal year-end duties as assigned
      • Prepare annual financial statements for KDUR
      • Review grant org setup by the Sponsored Research office
      • Manage Footprints ticketing system for GL team
      • Serve as backup for AP Accountant
      • Assist AP with 1099 tax reporting
      • Assists with researching complex accounting issues and provides support for campus departments as requested.

      • Assists faculty and staff regarding College accounting procedures and internal controls
      • Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities
